Flash Flood Results

This spring and summer we have been having all sorts of storms...
rain, sleet, thunder, thunder and lighting.
But while we were relaxing on the beach in Oregon on the 4th we missed a DOOZIE!!

Apparently it hailed for 30 minutes and then proceeded to flash flood.
We heard about it from as we drove home on Sunday and weren't too concerned because our house is quite a way up the hill...
We got home at 1am and could see that there had been some damage to the road as we drove up the hill. Next morning this is what we found down at the creek.

For those of you who know what the creek "used" to look like the bridge Chuck build was formerly right behind the little tree at an angle in the center of the picture and the center of the new creek route.

The row of sticks and debris show how far up on the lawn the creek rose. We figure it rose a minimum of 6 feet!

This is the wire fence wrapped around a willow that was formerly upstream.

This looks like total wilderness huh?

You can really see how far up the water went on this one with the
neat little mud and stick border.

This is where part of the creek "used" to run. As you can see it's now filled with some lovely rocks.

There were all sorts of logs, rocks, mud, sludge and even a 5 foot pry bar
that were scattered along the water's path.

I think that the bridge held back things for quite awhile and so the rocks built up and then it finally lifted and so the huge piles of rocks remained.

These next couple of shots show where my favorite part of the lawn "used" to be... it's now the new creek bed.

The last few shots are just some more of wiped out areas.

And last but not least, here is a sample of my planters after the hail. They "used" to be nicely flowering. Now they all look like goats got to them. Ahh well... It could have been MUCH worse. Some people we know who live up the hill and just moved into a new home last year had water rush into their basement and ended up with mud up to the ceiling. The pressure of the water and debris caused all the windows to burst on the front of the house.
Yeah. It's all a matter of perspective. We got off easy.
And Chuck likes the new "natural" look.
We'll be working on getting rid of the ripped up trees for awhile.

Crazy, Crazy, Crazy!! I think this flood has forever changed some of the landscapes! Makes me mad that we put so much work into our flowerbeds and burm, just to have them wiped out in a couple of hours!! I guess it's called "being Humbled!" Sorry you were out of town for the Big Show....it was AMAZING!!

Wow!
Makes you glad the house is well away from the creek bed. Ouch.

I'm glad no one was hurt.
Now you will have some wood to burn this winter...or have you converted to pellets?

WOW! Just shows you how powerful nature can be! Glad there was not house damage! It certainly changes your back yard. Amazing stuff. (We could take some of that wood off your hands :-))

Sounds like the storm we had here in June. It's wild. I'm so glad that your house was ok.
