As you can see from the image, an old lady trying to get her heart in shape is NOT a pretty sight! It's a nasty job and I'm the only one that can do it. I have to admit that I'm pretty darn amazed with myself though. If you had told me that I would ever run a mile I would have laughed as I covertly moved toward the phone to call the boys with the straight jackets. I mean REALLY! Me and running - enemies. No question. No doubt.
Well, never say never. I began walking on the treadmill back in Nov.? or so... I kept trying to speed up (it takes so long to get anything done). I eventually started to "run". I use the term loosely, as it isn’t really running, but it isn’t walking- jogging? Probably to ugly to be classified as that either. Whatever it is, I’ve been trying to do it at least 3 times a week- depending on how many other commitments I have for the week. On January 31 I ran (or whatever it is I do) for 5 MILES! Now, to diehard marathon runners that is a warm up. To me – well, let’s just say miracle is applicable. Then last Saturday I ran 6 miles and walked one to cool down. Crazy! Now lest you begin to fear I’ll turn into one of those running junkies, let me assure I did NOT enjoy it! I did however feel pretty good at surviving with nothing more than some slightly sore muscles on Sunday. I WON’T be doing that many miles again soon. I’m pretty happy to stay in the 3 mile range with some warm up and cool down walking to prevent muscle seizures in back, leg and buttocks.
The goal is NOT some drastic form of sadistic torture or even weight loss (though that would be a nice bonus:0) rather my attempt at getting my slightly elevated blood pressure back into it’s normally low range and to increase my strength and endurance. I have done something drastic – for me. I have cut out butter. Now to those who are not butter fans, you may be thinking “big deal”. You do not know the genetic inheritance from my dad. He has been seen to casually take a spoon at the dinner table and scoop directly from the butter dish into his mouth. I mean, I’ve seen the man eat it with ice cream! I am not ‘quite’ that addicted. Let’s just say that a piece of toast is an excuse to eat a half a stick and an oatmeal cookie with butter makes me drool. Yeah, I like butter- or as Homer would say “Ummmmm, buuuttterrrrr!!! I am also trying to eat more fruit and vegetables and whole grain products. I think I’m doing pretty well with the fruit part, the veggies are coming along. I mean really, how many baby carrots can you eat in a day?
So, that’s the exciting entry for today. The bell is going to ring and students are starting to trickle in….

Congrats!! Wow 6 miles....I get tired driving six miles. That is pretty sick about the butter though. :) I seriously feel sick to my stomach thinking of eating room temp. butter with a spoon. blah...... I agree about the veggies. Baby carrots are about all I can seem to fit in. Maybe you could construct butter into a sculpture of broccoli and that would count. J/K
I love you blog though!!!
